By: Zaghra Savahl Qur’an Journaling is a deeply rewarding practice. The benefits include learning about the Qur’an in such a way that it can have a profound effect on your life. It is a practice that encourages you to engage directly with the beautiful words of Allah (SWT) and embody its meaning. Through Qur'an Journaling you will be able to focus on the Quran, recite, ponder, and even memorize verses if you’re able to. If you’re not sure how to go about it or you need some help getting started, follow our tips below. 1. Have your journal and Qur’an ready A pretty journal can be really motivating to get you started. We encourage purchasing a Verily Journal along with a Wasila deck (which consists of various Qur’an Ayahs) and a Qur’an with Tafsir and translation. Along with a pen, these are the tools you’ll need. If you have access to internet, save a few website links that are dedicated to Qur’an studies for deeper analysis. 2. Schedule a time each day that is dedicated to Qur’an Journaling Getting into a routine will help with consistency. A scheduled time will help you to remain focused as it is a time that is specifically dedicated to the Qur’an. Many prefer a time when the world quiets down and there’s no one demanding your attention or presence. For most, this time is early mornings or just before bedtime. 3. Find a trusted Islamic scholar An Islamic scholar will assist in helping you understand the Qur’an in a deeper way. They can also provide you with more clarity on questions you might have as you’re jotting down Qur’anic texts and the analysis you’ve made. An extra tip is to write down any questions you have as you’re journaling so that when you meet the Islamic scholar, you will be reminded on what you needed to ask. If you don’t know of any Islamic scholars in person, don’t worry, there are many that have websites and social media channels online. Reach out to us if you need any online recommendations. 4. Start small, even if its just one or two words at a time Thinking about Qur’an journaling in terms of trying to complete the entire Qur’an might be overwhelming at the beginning. Start small and with the number of words that are manageable to you. Remember that it is an intellectual and emotional engagement that softens the heart, clarifies the mind, and motivates the limbs to actionEven journaling about one word found in the Qur’an can make a huge difference. This journey is between you and Allah (SWT). HE knows what is in your heart and what you are capable of. 5. Embrace the journey and let the words flow Allah (SWT) rewards you for your efforts in seeking knowledge that will bring you closer to HIM. Don’t overthink it and allow the words to flow onto your journal. Think of it as a private conversation between you and the Almighty (SWT). If you feel like you’re losing motivation, turn to Allah (SWT) and ask HIM for guidance and to help keep you steadfast on this journey. You’ve got this! What tips would you add to our list?
